I always wanted to visit Santorini. It is the first thing that came to my mind when I thought of going to Greece. Over the years though, it has gotten so popular and so crowded that I lost interest. Then, May 2021, Greece was one of the first countries to open for tourism after the Covid Pandemic and we jumped at the opportunity to visit.
Santorini sits on the edge of a volcanic crater that erupted 2500 years ago, right in the middle of tea. Just a village in 1970, now a breath taking photographers dream. Cliff hanging restaurants, resorts and shops. Getting there was a journey with a long ferry ride and taxi ride up the top of the Volcano where the main road leads you to your hotels.
We were very lucky to have visited this place with few tourists. The streets and walkways were empty and it was beautiful to see the blue water, get into restaurants without reservations and feel the vibe without hustle and bustle and fighting for that perfect photo. It just wouldn't be the same with crowds of people.
If you do visit, expect a lot of stairs to restaurants and hotels as they are all located on the side of the cliff. This makes for stunning views. There are no elevators. If Santorini is on you bucket list, visit during the off peak season such as May or September and while you are physically able to climb lots of stairs. You will Love this magical place.
